Frequently asked questions

Yes. The installation process involves several steps. Below we have included a process diagram for the pre-press and for the print shop.

Toyobo produces two types of photopolymer plates.

  • Flexographic plates under the Cosmolight brand, which can be used for printing with all commercially availablePrinting inks used in flexographyPrinting inks UV, solvent and water-based).
  • Letterpress plates Letterpress metal or foil are manufactured under the Printight brand. The plates can be used in printing with commercially available UV, alcohol, and oil-based inks.

We have customers who print runs of up to 500,000 mb at 175 lpi and a stable point of 0.5%. In order to achieve such print runs, it is necessary to meet several factors that affect the strength of the plate. These include:

  • Properly matched anilox to the resolution of the work,
  • raw material that does not dust or abrade the printing plate,
  • Printing with sufficiently light pressure,
  • Using the right foam for the type of work and hardness Printing plate,
  • printing on a machine that is not supposed to take a beating during operation.
  • Using non-aggressive inks, which does not cause swelling and distortion of printing plates and does not require wiping during printing.

In our customers' experience, they return to archived plates for up to 9 years. Some say it's quicker for a customer to change the design than for the printing plate to wear out.

To enjoy the long life of Toyobo printing plates , it is worth following the tips in point 1 and taking care of the printing plates after printing by washing them in our dedicated cleaning agents in automatic post-printing die washers and storing them in airtight slightly moistened envelopes preferably flat.

The main warehouse is located in Poland, but we also have dedicated warehouses located at our dealers in Italy and Serbia.

Within Poland, the plates are delivered within 1 working day. As for foreign (European) markets such as, for example, Italy, Serbia, Romania, if a particular type of plate is not available locally from the distributor, the delivery time is about 4 working days.

Flexo: The thickness range of Cosmolighj analog and CtP flexo plates is (1.14mm; 1.7mm; 2.84mm) boothard formats available are: 635×762 mm, 900×1200 mm and 1067×1524 mm.

Typo: Printight letterpress plate thickness range on film (0.43mm to 2.00mm) on metal (0.43mm to 1.7mm) CtP plates on film (0.70mm; 0.80mm; 0.95mm) on metal (0.73mm; 0.83mm; 0.95mm). Formats are plentiful, so ask our sales department about a specific format.

On special requests and with the appropriate MOQ, we can deliver the plate under the required format.

By machines we mean: a laser and a processor to make a high-quality die. During the visit, our technical advisor can check whether the equipment you have will be able to process the printing plate in the quality you expect. What we need to check is:

  • Laser type, format and resolution
  • sections in the processor (Leaching (type of brushes and type of leaching agent), is there a UVC illumination section?)

If we find it impossible to perform any step of the process, it is possible to make test printing plates in our pre-press room or provide a test machine with all the necessary sections.

The quality of printing depends on many factors, but in the type section we will focus only on the technical capabilities confirmed in daily work by our customers.

  • Flekso: Customers who meet the hardware requirements, (such as aniloxes properly matched to the resolution of the job, or the right light power in the copier) can print full runs from 1% at 175 lpi. The Cosmolight QZ plate has the ability to print from 200 lpi but in practice no one uses this. On the other hand, when we use the plate exposure on the QUICKER UVLED QUICKER we are able to print a stable spot of 0.5% at 175 lpi.
  • Typo: Here the situation is similar to that of flexo plate.

Yes, Toyobo flexographic andLetterpress platesLetterpress be processed by any CtP laser currently available on the market designed to work with photopolymer plates. A magnetic cylinder is required for metal letterpress plates.

Flexo: Yes. The Cosmolight Toyobo flexo plate is washed in water with a small addition of washing agent, which we supply. The washing agent is added in an amount of 0.3-1% by volume of water in the bath.

Typo: Toyobo Letterpress plates do not require detergent. They can be washed in ordinary, softened water without additives.

Any process of leaching photopolymers whether it is leaching in solvent or in water causes the unexposed photopolymer to be dissolved in the leaching agent during processing. In our case, the leaching agent is water with detergent. Therefore, the question can be answered in the affirmative, as this is the function of the leaching agent (water) in this process.

The frequency of water changes depends on the number of m2 washed out in a given amount of water, as well as the thickness of the polymer and the area washed out. In our in-house prep room, we use 26 liters per m2 of 1.14-mm-thick polymer. The inline unit uses about 9 liters per m2 of photopolymer.

We have four types of handling the effluent after leaching Toyobo photopolymer plates, depending on local and internal conditions:

  • Discharge into the sewer system, if the local wastewater collector accepts this type of waste.
  • Drain into an industrial waste tank and later dispose of with other waste.
  • The effluent can be disposed of for a fee in liquid form or after gelation as solid waste.
  • The effluent from the flexo plates can be treated to produce "gray water" suitable for draining and polymer recovered from the effluent after this process. The recovered polymer is disposed of in the same way as plate cuttings or printing plates no longer used. Device in production.

Printing plate flexographic production process consists of the following steps:

  • Backlighting of the plate ( Flexographic plates only)
  • mask photo on CtP laser
  • leaching
  • drying
  • UVA illumination
  • UVC illumination ( Flexographic plates only)

The time required to produce a photopolymer printing plate depends on the size of the printing plate and the performance of the laser, exposing machine and processor. Indicatively, for a Cosmolight QZ 114 plate in 635×762 format, it is about 53 minutes. Processing a letterpress plate takes less time and is about 40 minutes.

Why Toyobo plates?

Solvent-free technology

Water development eliminates the need for solvent chemicals - not only a step toward sustainable production, but also simplifying logistics and reducing disposal costs.

High quality reproduction

Flat-top points guarantee excellent detail transfer, greater control over ink saturation and color stability even in long runs.

Repeatability and stability of the process

Toyobo's aqueous technology provides predictability and consistency in pre-press - plates maintain quality and dimension regardless of environmental conditions.

Reduced mold production time

A full plate preparation cycle takes up to less than 45 minutes, allowing you to significantly increase the efficiency of your DTP studio and respond faster to production needs.

Versatility of applications

One technology - many applications: Toyobo plates work well for printing labels, flexible packaging, cartons, tubes, envelopes and many other applications.

High mechanical and chemical resistance

The plates remain stable in contact with UV, water-based and solvent inks, and their structure can withbooth intensive use on printing machines.
